2. Origin: Ceylon, Bangkok and others
Ceylon (Sri Lankan) Neelam usually carries a premium; Bangkok and mixed-origin stones are more affordable. Both are natural sapphire. Origin is a laboratory opinion, so if you are paying for it, it should be stated on the report or listing.
3. Treatment: heated, unheated, diffused
Many blue sapphires are heat-treated; unheated stones are rarer and cost more. The market also has diffusion-treated stones, synthetic corundum and glass sold as natural. The report or listing should say “no indication of treatment” or name the treatment, for example “indication of thermal enhancement”.
