Neelam (Blue Sapphire) vs Tanzanite: Difference & Which to Wear
Neelam (Blue Sapphire) and Tanzanite are both a deep blue-violet, so they are easy to mix up on sight. They are very different stones, though. Neelam is a precious corundum sapphire and the classical gem of Saturn (Shani) among the Navratna. Tanzanite is a softer, modern stone found only in Tanzania, and it is not a traditional Vedic remedy at all. If you are choosing one for astrology, that difference matters. Here is how they compare, and which one you should actually wear.

Why people mix them up
Both stones share that rich blue-violet colour, and a well-cut tanzanite can look very close to a fine neelam. That is where the confusion starts. Some buyers are simply unsure whether tanzanite “works” in place of a blue sapphire, and a few sellers are happy to blur the line. The honest answer is that they are not interchangeable, especially for astrology.
Tanzanite is a beautiful stone, but it is not the classical Saturn gem. For a Shani remedy, neelam is the one.
Which should you wear?
If you want a Saturn (Shani) remedy, choose a certified natural Neelam. It is the classical Navratna gem for Saturn, and it is famously fast and powerful, which is exactly why it should be worn on an astrologer's advice and often trialled for a few days first. Tanzanite has no traditional role in Vedic astrology. It is a lovely stone to look at, and perfectly fine as fashion jewellery, but it will not stand in for neelam in jyotish. It is also softer at 6.5 to 7, so it scratches more easily and needs gentler wear.
How to tell Neelam from Tanzanite
- Read the certificate. A genuine report names the mineral, either "Natural Blue Sapphire (Corundum)" or "Tanzanite (Zoisite)". That settles it.
- Check the flash. Tanzanite is strongly pleochroic, so it often shows violet and blue in different angles. Sapphire is steadier in colour.
- Hardness. Sapphire is 9 and tanzanite is 6.5 to 7, which a lab can confirm.
- Prefer X-ray or lab verification over a seller's word.
The GemsMantra standard
From a 53-year family lineage of Vedic practice, every Neelam is individually X-ray tested and ships with a government-recognised certificate carrying a verifiable report number, so you always know exactly which stone you are wearing.
Common questions
Is tanzanite the same as blue sapphire?
No. Tanzanite is a zoisite, while Blue Sapphire (Neelam) is a corundum. They share a blue-violet colour, but their mineral, hardness, price and astrological use are all different.
Can I wear tanzanite instead of neelam for Saturn?
No. Tanzanite is a modern stone with no classical role in Vedic astrology. For a Saturn (Shani) remedy, Neelam is the traditional gem. Confirm suitability with an astrologer.
How do I tell neelam from tanzanite?
Check the certificate for the mineral name, look for tanzanite's violet-blue pleochroism, and compare hardness (sapphire is 9, tanzanite 6.5 to 7). Lab verification is safest.
Is tanzanite cheaper than neelam?
Usually yes, and it is softer too. Fine neelam, especially unheated Sri Lankan or Kashmir sapphire, can cost far more per carat.
Which is better for astrology?
Neelam, without question. It is the classical Saturn gem. Tanzanite is best treated as a fashion or collector stone.
