What decides the price of a natural gemstone

Prices for natural gemstones and original rudraksha are not random and they are not one fixed "rate". A stone that sounds identical by name can vary many times over in price. Almost the entire difference comes down to four measurable, gemological factors — the same ones every serious jeweller and lab uses. Understand these and you can judge value for yourself instead of trusting a headline number.

1. WeightQuoted per ratti or per carat (1 ratti ≈ 0.91 carat ≈ 0.182 g). Larger stones are rarer, so the per-unit price usually rises with size — not linearly.
2. QualityColour, clarity, cut and lustre. For coloured stones the depth and evenness of colour and the transparency matter most; for organic gems like coral and pearl, surface, shape and lustre drive the grade.
3. OriginWhere the stone was mined or formed. Ceylon (Sri Lanka) sapphire, Colombian & Zambian emerald and natural saltwater pearl carry a documented premium over other sources of similar size.
4. CertificationA lab report stating natural vs treated/synthetic, and any treatment (heating, oiling). This is what protects the price — a stone without a credible certificate is worth guessing at, not paying for.
5. TreatmentUnheated, untreated stones are rarer and priced higher than heated or oil-enhanced ones. Treatment isn't dishonest when disclosed — hiding it is. Every treatment should be on the certificate.
6. RaritySome varieties and colours simply occur less often in nature. Genuine scarcity — not manufactured urgency — is a legitimate reason a natural stone commands more.

What decides the price of a rudraksha

Rudraksha is a natural seed bead (from the Elaeocarpus tree), so its pricing works differently from a cut mineral. Three factors dominate:

  • Mukhi (faces): the number of natural lines or faces on the bead. Common mukhi like 5-mukhi are widely available and inexpensive; rarer mukhi such as 1-mukhi round, 14-mukhi and above rise sharply as collector rarities.
  • Bead size (mm) & surface: larger, well-formed beads with clearly defined mukhi lines and no holes or damage grade higher.
  • Origin: Nepali beads are typically larger with deeper, well-defined mukhi and command a premium; Java (Indonesian) beads are smaller, smoother and usually more affordable. Both are genuine — the choice is budget and preference.

For genuine beads an X-ray / lab authenticity check confirms the internal mukhi structure. See the full 1-to-21 Mukhi rate guide and our natural rudraksha collection.

Stone-by-stone: ruling planet & where to see full rates

Below is the quick map. The "ruling planet" is the traditional Vedic (Jyotish) association — a matter of belief, not a claim of any guaranteed effect. For the actual price bands, per-ratti / per-carat rates and quality tiers, open the full guide for each stone — we deliberately don't print a single "rate" here, because a real price depends on the four factors above.

Frequently asked questions

Why do natural gemstone prices vary so much?
A natural gemstone's price is set by measurable gemological factors — weight (per ratti or per carat), quality (colour, clarity, cut and lustre), geographic origin, any treatment (such as heating or oiling), and the lab certificate that documents all of this. Two stones of the same name can differ many times over in price purely on these attributes. Our per-stone guides break down each factor so you can judge value, not just the headline number.
Is per ratti or per carat the correct way to compare?
Both are used in India. One ratti is roughly 0.91 carat (about 0.182 grams), so a per-carat quote is always a little higher than the same stone quoted per ratti. Coloured stones like Pukhraj, Panna, Gomed and Cat's Eye are commonly sold per ratti, while Ruby and some fine stones are often quoted per carat. Always confirm the unit before comparing two prices — each spoke guide states the unit used for that stone.
Does the origin of a gemstone really change its price?
Yes — origin is a genuine market factor. Ceylon (Sri Lanka) sapphires, Colombian and Zambian emeralds, and natural saltwater pearls command higher prices than material from other sources of comparable size because of their reputation for colour and clarity. Origin should be documented on the lab certificate, never taken on a verbal claim alone.
Are more expensive gemstones more powerful or effective?
No. In Vedic tradition the belief is that a gemstone's suitability depends on your individual birth chart, not on its price. A higher price reflects the rarity, size and quality of the natural stone — it is not a promise of any specific result. Gemstones are worn as a matter of faith and tradition and are not a substitute for medical, legal, financial or professional advice.
How is Rudraksha priced?
Rudraksha price is driven mainly by the mukhi (number of natural faces), bead size in millimetres, and origin — Nepali beads are typically larger with deeper, well-defined mukhi lines, while Java (Indonesian) beads are smaller, smoother and usually more affordable. Common mukhi like 5-mukhi are inexpensive; rare mukhi such as 1-mukhi round, 14-mukhi and above rise sharply as collector rarities. See the full 1-to-21 Mukhi guide for detail.
How do I know I'm paying a fair price and getting a genuine stone?
Every GemsMantra order ships with a verifiable Authenticity Report you can check by number, and we do not use inflated or fake crossed-out MRP pricing. If any stone is ever proven synthetic or artificial by a Government-recognised or ISO-certified gem lab, you get a 100% refund. Read exactly what we promise on our Certification & Guarantee page and verify any certificate at our certificate-check page.
