What Gomed is

Gomed is the Hindi name for hessonite, an orange-brown to honey-coloured variety of grossular garnet. It is about 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale with a refractive index of about 1.74.

Gomed or Cat’s Eye?

They are different minerals: Gomed is a garnet (hessonite), while true Cat’s Eye (Lehsuniya) is chrysoberyl with a sharp band of light across its dome. A certificate names the species, so check that line to be sure which stone you are buying.

What sets the price

Colour (a clear honey to cinnamon tone is preferred over very dark or muddy stones), clarity, cut and weight set the price. In our current listings the price per ratti is tightly grouped (₹3,075 to ₹3,083 across the 9 stones in the table), so the total price mainly reflects the weight.

Origin and weight

All 12 active Gomed listings are from Sri Lanka (Ceylon), from about 5.2 to 9.1 carats. With few stones in stock, choice is limited; ask us if you need a weight that is not listed.

Ratti and carat

A carat is 200 mg. Gomed listings show weight in carats and ratti. Other sellers may use a different ratti, so compare quotes by carat weight; our carat to ratti converter does the arithmetic.

Care

Hessonite is hard enough for rings but can chip on a hard knock. Clean it with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush, and store it apart from harder stones such as sapphire.
