Verify any certificate in 5 steps
- Find the report number. It is printed on the card or document, often next to a QR code.
- Open the lab's official website yourself. Type the lab's address or use the table below. Do not rely only on a QR code or link sent by the seller.
- Enter the number in the lab's report-check page. Some labs also ask for the carat weight.
- Match every key field. Weight in carats (to two decimal places), species and variety, shape and measurements, colour, treatment comment, and the photo if the lab shows one.
- Weigh and look. A jeweller's scale should show the same carat weight within a very small tolerance. If no record opens, or any key field differs, stop and ask the seller before you pay or wear the stone.

What a gem lab report shows
A gem lab report, which most buyers call a certificate, is a laboratory's written opinion on a specific stone, issued after tests such as refractive index, specific gravity and microscopy. A typical coloured-gemstone report shows:
- Report number and date of issue
- Species (for example corundum, beryl) and variety (for example blue sapphire, emerald)
- Weight in carats, sometimes also in ratti
- Shape, cutting style, measurements and colour
- Test readings: refractive index, specific gravity, optic character, birefringence, hardness
- Tests carried out and comments, which is where treatment is usually disclosed (for example “no indication of heating”, “indication of thermal enhancement”, “oiling”)
- Origin, which is an opinion; many labs give it only on request, and some not at all
For rudraksha, a report usually records the number of faces (mukhi). X-ray reports also show the internal compartments, which can overlap and be hard to count.

If your report comes from a laboratory not listed here, look for a report-check page on that laboratory's own official website. If it has no online lookup, contact the lab using details from its official website, not from the certificate.
Red flags on a gemstone certificate
- The number does not open anything on the lab's own site, or it only works through a link the seller sent.
- The weight or measurements do not match your stone.
- “Natural” with no treatment comment at all, especially on sapphire, ruby and emerald, where treatments are common.
- A lab name you cannot find as an independent laboratory, or a website that looks like a known lab's but sits on a different domain.
- The report shows a different stone: a photo, colour or shape that differs from what you received.
- Big promises printed on the certificate, such as astrological benefits or a price valuation presented as lab findings.
- A remarkably low price for a “fine, unheated, certified” stone. Rare stones are priced as rare stones.
How to check a GemsMantra report

Is a certificate the same as a lab report?
In everyday Indian usage, yes: buyers say “certificate” for a gem lab report. What matters is who issued it, an independent laboratory or the seller itself, and whether you can check the number on the issuer's own website. A seller's own report can still be useful, but know which kind you are holding and verify it where it was issued.
Can I get my stone re-tested at another lab?
Yes. You can take any stone to an independent laboratory for testing. Why is the origin on my report blank or “not determined”?
Origin is a laboratory opinion that needs extra tests, and many standard reports leave it out. A missing origin does not mean the stone is fake. It does mean you should not pay a premium for an origin claim that has not been stated by a lab. Differences in estimated origin between labs are also common.
Why do two reports give slightly different weights in ratti?
Ratti is a traditional unit, and sellers convert it with slightly different factors. Always compare carats, which is the unit laboratories actually weigh in; the carat figure on the report should match the listing. Does a certificate prove a stone will work astrologically?
