Indraneelam Stone (Neelam, Blue Sapphire)

The name Indraneelam

Indraneelam comes from the Sanskrit indranīla, which the Monier-Williams dictionary defines simply as "a sapphire". It joins Indra, king of the gods in Vedic myth, with nīla, blue. Sanskrit Wikipedia titles its sapphire article इन्द्रनीलः. Malayalam Wikipedia's ഇന്ദ്രനീലം article calls it one of the navaratnas and the gem of Saturn, and the Malayalam navaratna list places it beside മാണിക്യം (ruby) and മരതകം (emerald). The name is used mainly in Kerala.

Why Neelam gets extra care

Among the nine gems, Neelam is the one astrologers are most careful about. Tradition treats it as a strong stone, so the usual advice is to confirm it against the whole kundli, not the rashi alone. Many astrologers also suggest a short trial before you wear Indraneelam for the long term. Use the free Gemstone Calculator as a first check, then take the chart to an astrologer consultation (₹499, adjusted against a purchase).

What to check on an Indraneelam listing

• Origin. In a 24-Sep-2026 sample of 20 Neelam listings on this site, all 20 gave Sri Lanka as the origin. Origin is printed on the report; ask if it is missing.
• Heat treatment. In the same sample, 2 listings disclosed "Indication of Thermal Enhancement", which means heat treatment. Heated sapphires are normally priced below unheated ones of the same look, so read this field before comparing prices.
• Colour and light. Blue sapphire can look inky indoors and brighter in daylight. Ask for daylight photos or a video.
• The report. Every order ships with a GemsMantra Authenticity Report. Enter its number on the Check Certificate page. The certification and guarantee page explains the refund if a qualifying lab proves a stone synthetic. GemsMantra works with leading labs including GIA, IGI, GRS and GJEPC's IIGJ. Each stone's listing names the lab that issued its report and the report number.

Stones that can pass for Indraneelam

Several blue gems look like sapphire at a glance. Iolite, sold as Neeli and named as an upratna for Neelam, is much lighter and shows strong pleochroism: turn it and the colour shifts from violet-blue to a pale grey or yellowish tone. Blue spinel and tanzanite are also seen, as is blue glass. The simplest check is again the report: sapphire's refractive index is about 1.76–1.77, iolite's about 1.54–1.55, spinel's about 1.72, and glass varies. A blue stone labelled "Neelam" or "Indraneelam" without a species on the report is not enough to go on.

Wearing customs, as traditionally stated

Indraneelam is traditionally set in silver or panchdhatu and worn on the middle finger of the working hand, first on a Saturday, usually during the waxing moon. Common advice on weight is about 3 ratti or more; treat that as general guidance. Listings show carat and ratti, and the carat to ratti converter helps you compare them.
