The name Indraneelam
Indraneelam comes from the Sanskrit indranīla, which the Monier-Williams dictionary defines simply as "a sapphire". It joins Indra, king of the gods in Vedic myth, with nīla, blue. Sanskrit Wikipedia titles its sapphire article इन्द्रनीलः. Malayalam Wikipedia's ഇന്ദ്രനീലം article calls it one of the navaratnas and the gem of Saturn, and the Malayalam navaratna list places it beside മാണിക്യം (ruby) and മരതകം (emerald). The name is used mainly in Kerala.
Why Neelam gets extra care
Among the nine gems, Neelam is the one astrologers are most careful about. Tradition treats it as a strong stone, so the usual advice is to confirm it against the whole kundli, not the rashi alone. Stones that can pass for Indraneelam
Several blue gems look like sapphire at a glance. Iolite, sold as Neeli and named as an upratna for Neelam, is much lighter and shows strong pleochroism: turn it and the colour shifts from violet-blue to a pale grey or yellowish tone. Blue spinel and tanzanite are also seen, as is blue glass. The simplest check is again the report: sapphire's refractive index is about 1.76–1.77, iolite's about 1.54–1.55, spinel's about 1.72, and glass varies. A blue stone labelled "Neelam" or "Indraneelam" without a species on the report is not enough to go on.
Wearing customs, as traditionally stated
Indraneelam is traditionally set in silver or panchdhatu and worn on the middle finger of the working hand, first on a Saturday, usually during the waxing moon.
