Real vs Fake Ruby (Manik): How to Spot a Fake
Ruby (Manik) is one of the most valuable coloured stones, so the market is full of fakes. Red glass, garnet and spinel sold under the wrong name, lab-grown rubies and cheap glass-filled composite stones are all passed off as natural Manik. A few simple checks, plus a proper certificate, will keep you safe. Here is how to tell a real Ruby from a fake before you buy.
Want a Manik you can trust? Every stone in the GemsMantra Ruby collection is natural, X-ray verified and comes with a lab certificate you can check.
The common fakes to watch for
| Type | What it is | Tell-tale sign |
|---|---|---|
| Red glass | Coloured glass cut as a gem | Round gas bubbles inside, very clean, softer |
| Garnet or spinel | Cheaper red stones sold as ruby | Garnet is darker, softer; a certificate names the mineral |
| Lab-grown ruby | Real chemistry, made in a lab | Very clean, cheap, curved growth lines a lab can see |
| Glass-filled composite | Ruby fragments bonded with lead glass | Blue flash and gas bubbles in the glass, very cheap |
Simple checks you can do
- Check hardness and price together. Real ruby is very hard (9 on the Mohs scale) and never cheap. A soft, large, low-priced “ruby” is usually glass, garnet or a glass-filled composite.
- Look for bubbles and flashes. Round gas bubbles mean glass, and a blue flash inside a red stone often signals a lead-glass composite.
- Compare the red. Real ruby is a bright, vivid red. Garnet tends to look darker and brownish.
- Be wary of flawless and cheap. A large, perfectly clean stone at a low price is a warning sign.
The eye can be fooled, and a good fake looks convincing. The certificate is the one check that cannot be argued with.
The only sure test: a certificate
Home checks catch the obvious fakes, but they cannot confirm whether a stone is natural, synthetic or treated. For that you need a report from a recognised lab. A genuine certificate states that the stone is a natural ruby, notes any treatment such as glass-filling, and carries a report number you can verify. When you buy by certificate, you are not relying on a photo or a promise.
The GemsMantra standard
We come from a 53-year family lineage of Vedic practice, and we treat trust as the product. Every Manik is individually X-ray tested and ships with a government-recognised certificate that confirms a natural ruby, with a verifiable report number.
Common questions
How can I tell if a Ruby is real?
Check hardness and price together (real ruby is very hard and never cheap), look for gas bubbles or a blue flash that signal glass or a composite, compare the red against garnet, and buy with a certificate from a recognised lab.
Are garnet and spinel sold as ruby?
Yes, often. Both are cheaper red stones sometimes sold as ruby. A certificate naming the mineral is the clear answer.
What is a glass-filled ruby?
It is ruby fragments bonded with lead glass to look like one solid stone. It is worth a fraction of a natural ruby, and a lab will note the treatment. Watch for a blue flash and bubbles.
Does a lab-grown ruby work for astrology?
In Vedic tradition, no. Only a natural manik is worn as a Sun (Surya) remedy. Lab-grown stones are treated as jewellery.
What hardness is real ruby?
Ruby is a corundum with a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond, far harder than glass or garnet.
