Manik (Ruby) vs Red Spinel: Difference & Which to Wear
Ruby (Manik) and Red Spinel look so alike that jewellers confused them for centuries. Some of history's most famous “rubies”, like the Black Prince's Ruby in the British crown, are actually spinels. For a buyer today the difference still matters. Manik is a precious corundum ruby and the classical gem of the Sun (Surya) among the Navratna. Red Spinel is a separate mineral, softer and cheaper, and not a traditional Vedic remedy. Here is how they compare, and which one you should wear.

Why they were confused for so long
Before modern gem testing, red was red. A fine spinel and a fine ruby glow with the same warm colour, so even royal jewellers mislabelled them. Today a lab can tell them apart in minutes, but in the market the old confusion still helps sellers pass a cheaper spinel as ruby. Knowing the difference protects both your money and, if you are buying for astrology, your remedy.
Red spinel is a genuine, beautiful stone. It is simply not ruby, and it is not the classical Sun gem.
Which should you wear?
For a Sun (Surya) remedy, worn for confidence, authority, vitality and leadership, choose a certified natural Manik (Ruby). It is the classical Navratna gem of the Sun. Red Spinel has no traditional role in Vedic astrology. It is a lovely red stone and a fine choice for jewellery, but it will not stand in for ruby in jyotish. Because Manik is a powerful stone, wear it on an astrologer's advice and fix the correct weight first.
How to tell Manik from Red Spinel
- Read the certificate. A genuine report names the mineral, either "Natural Ruby (Corundum)" or "Spinel". That settles it.
- Look inside. Ruby often shows silk and needle-like inclusions. Spinel tends to be cleaner, with octahedral inclusions a lab can spot.
- Hardness. Ruby is 9 and spinel is 8, close but measurable in a lab.
- Prefer X-ray or lab verification over a seller's word.
The GemsMantra standard
From a 53-year family lineage of Vedic practice, every Manik is individually X-ray tested and ships with a government-recognised certificate carrying a verifiable report number, so you always know exactly which stone you are wearing.
Common questions
Is red spinel the same as ruby?
No. Spinel and Ruby (Manik, a corundum) are different minerals. They share a red colour and were historically confused, but their hardness, price and astrological use differ.
Can I wear red spinel instead of manik for the Sun?
No. Red spinel has no classical role in Vedic astrology. For a Sun (Surya) remedy, Manik (Ruby) is the traditional gem. Confirm with an astrologer.
How do I tell ruby from red spinel?
Check the certificate for the mineral name, and let a lab read the inclusions and hardness. Ruby is 9 on the Mohs scale, spinel is 8.
Is red spinel cheaper than ruby?
Usually yes. Fine ruby, especially untreated Burmese ruby, commands far higher prices per carat than spinel.
Which is better for astrology?
Manik (Ruby), for a Sun remedy. Red spinel is best treated as a fashion or collector stone.
