Manik (Ruby) vs Red Garnet: Difference & Which to Wear
Ruby (Manik) and Red Garnet are both deep red, and garnet is probably the single most common stone mistaken for ruby. They are different stones, though, and the gap in value and astrological strength is large. Manik is a precious corundum ruby and the classical gem of the Sun (Surya) among the Navratna. Red Garnet is a cheaper, softer mineral with no traditional role in jyotish. Here is how they compare, and which one you should wear.

Why garnet is mistaken for ruby
Red garnet is affordable and easy to find, and a good one has a rich red that looks close to ruby at a glance. That is exactly why it is so often sold as ruby, or as “American ruby” and similar trade names, at many times its fair price. Look closer and ruby usually has a brighter, more vivid red, while garnet tends to be darker and slightly brownish. The surest test is not the eye, it is the certificate.
If a “ruby” costs a few hundred rupees a carat, it is almost certainly garnet, not manik.
Which should you wear?
For a Sun (Surya) remedy, worn for confidence, authority, vitality and leadership, choose a certified natural Manik (Ruby). It is the classical Navratna gem of the Sun. Red Garnet has no traditional role in Vedic astrology. It is a pleasant, affordable red stone for jewellery, but it will not stand in for ruby in jyotish. Because Manik is a powerful stone, wear it on an astrologer's advice and fix the correct weight first.
How to tell Manik from Red Garnet
- Read the certificate. A genuine report names the mineral, either "Natural Ruby (Corundum)" or "Garnet". That settles it.
- Look at the red. Ruby is a brighter, more vivid red. Garnet is usually darker and can look brownish.
- Mind the price. Ruby is far rarer than garnet, so a very cheap "ruby" is worth a second look.
- Prefer X-ray or lab verification over a seller's word.
The GemsMantra standard
From a 53-year family lineage of Vedic practice, every Manik is individually X-ray tested and ships with a government-recognised certificate carrying a verifiable report number, so you always know exactly which stone you are wearing.
Common questions
Is red garnet the same as ruby?
No. Ruby (Manik) is a corundum, while red garnet is a garnet (almandine or pyrope). They share a red colour, but their hardness, price and astrological use differ.
Can I wear red garnet instead of manik for the Sun?
No. Red garnet has no classical role in Vedic astrology. For a Sun (Surya) remedy, Manik (Ruby) is the traditional gem. Confirm with an astrologer.
How do I tell ruby from red garnet?
Check the certificate for the mineral name, compare the red (ruby is brighter, garnet darker or brownish), and sanity-check the price. Ruby is 9 on the Mohs scale, garnet 6.5 to 7.5.
Why is garnet so much cheaper than ruby?
Garnet is common and softer, while gem-quality ruby is rare, which is why manik costs many times more per carat.
Which is better for astrology?
Manik (Ruby), for a Sun remedy. Red garnet is best seen as a fashion stone.
