Nearly every emerald on the market carries some degree of oil treatment, a long-accepted practice that fills naturally occurring surface-reaching fractures with oil or resin to improve transparency. A “no oil” grade on a gemological certificate means the lab found no evidence of this treatment at all — the stone's clarity is entirely the product of nature.

Reaching this level of natural clarity while still retaining emerald's signature colour is genuinely rare, since the same geological conditions that create emerald's colour typically also create internal fissures.
