Natural Alexandrite – Premium Quality
Description
Alexandrite performs one of the most remarkable optical tricks in the gem world: shifting from green or bluish-green in daylight to red or purplish-red under incandescent light — a genuine colour-change phenomenon, not an illusion of cut or setting.
About Natural Alexandrite
Alexandrite is a variety of the mineral chrysoberyl, first discovered in Russia's Ural Mountains in the 1830s and named after Tsar Alexander II. Its colour change is caused by the way trace chromium interacts differently with different light sources, a property found in very few gemstones and rarely to this dramatic degree.
The original Russian deposits are now essentially exhausted, and while alexandrite is also found in Sri Lanka, Brazil and parts of East Africa, stones showing a strong, high-contrast colour change in larger sizes remain extremely rare and are priced well above most other coloured gemstones.
Astrological Significance
Alexandrite is a 19th-century discovery and has no place in the classical Vedic Navratna system. Because it visibly holds two distinct colours within one stone, it is widely embraced today as a symbol of balance, adaptability and transformation — a gemstone many choose for its personal meaning and rarity rather than a specific planetary remedy.
Who Should Wear This Stone
This is a gemstone for those drawn to genuine natural rarity and the fascination of a stone that visibly changes character — an excellent choice for collectors, distinctive engagement rings, and anyone wanting something distinctly uncommon.
Quality You Can Trust
Because so much of alexandrite's value depends on the strength of its colour change, grading focuses heavily on the contrast between daylight and incandescent colour, in addition to standard clarity, cut and origin assessment. Certification should specifically describe and quantify the colour-change effect.
Care Instructions
Chrysoberyl is notably hard (Mohs 8.5), making alexandrite quite durable for regular wear. Clean with mild soap and warm water; ultrasonic cleaning is generally safe for untreated stones but should be confirmed against the specific stone's treatment history.
