An original opal is a natural, solid opal whose play-of-colour is its own, and whose identity, weight and any treatment or assembly are stated on a gem-lab report that you can check yourself.

How to buy a genuine Opal online: the 7 checks before buying
1. Certificate first, then verify it yourself
The report should name the stone as natural opal, give its weight in carats and state whether it is solid, a doublet or a triplet, and whether it is treated. Enter the report number on the laboratory's own official website. Our guide on how to verify a gemstone certificate lists official report-check pages.
2. Look at the side
Hold the opal edge-on (buying online, ask for a side-on video of the loose stone, because a bezel setting or closed back hides the side). A perfectly straight, even join line between a thin colour layer and a uniform dark backing points to a doublet. A clear dome over a thin colour layer points to a triplet. Natural boulder opal and some solid black opals also have a dark base under the colour, but the boundary is wavy and irregular, not a straight glue line. A lab confirms which it is.
3. Look at the pattern
Natural play-of-colour is irregular and changes with the angle. Under a 10x loupe, a regular mosaic of colour patches with a “lizard-skin” or “chicken-wire” texture, or columns seen from the side, suggests lab-created opal. Colour that looks like crinkled foil suggests glass. Some glass and plastic imitations do show shifting colour, and not every synthetic shows its pattern clearly, so only a lab can confirm.
4. Ask about treatment
Some opal is treated to darken the background or is impregnated to stabilise it. That is acceptable only when it is disclosed on the report or listing. Care note: most Ethiopian opal is hydrophane. It can soak up water and turn clearer or lose its colour play for hours or days until it dries, and it can absorb oil, milk or dye and stain permanently. That is natural, not a sign of a fake, so do not judge an opal by a “water test”, and ask how the stone will be handled before any ritual that involves soaking it.
5. Ratti vs carat: compare in carats

6. Read the return policy before you pay
Check how many days you have, which reasons count, whether an unboxing video is required, and what happens if an independent lab later finds the stone synthetic or not as described.
7. Red flags
No report. A “black opal” at a very low price with no treatment or assembly stated. A glue line or a perfectly flat, uniform dark back. Colour that looks painted or never changes. Promises of specific astrological results.

Simple checks you can do
- Turn it edge-on. A perfectly straight join line, or a clear cap over a thin colour layer, points to a doublet or triplet. Natural boulder opal can show an irregular brown or dark ironstone layer. That is natural, but the stone should be named as boulder opal.
- Watch the colour move. Play-of-colour shifts as you tilt the stone. Painted-looking colour that stays put is a warning sign, but shifting colour alone does not prove the stone is natural: lab-created opal and some imitations shift too.
- Check the back. A perfectly flat, jet-black back with a glue line points to an assembled stone.
- Weigh the price against the claim. Bright “black opal” at a throwaway price is usually assembled, treated or imitation.
Home checks catch only the obvious fakes. They cannot confirm whether a stone is natural, synthetic or treated, so treat them as a first filter, never as proof.
