2. Know which cat's eye you are buying
Chrysoberyl cat's eye is the classical Lehsunia and is rare and costly. Quartz cat's eye is also natural, looks similar and is much cheaper. Both are sold as Lehsunia, and so are other natural cat's eyes such as sillimanite and apatite, so the mineral named on the report decides the price you should pay.
3. Check the eye
Under a single light, any cat's eye (natural, synthetic or glass) shows one band that moves across the dome as you tilt it, so a moving eye does not prove the stone is natural. Be wary when the eye is identical on every stone in a seller's photos, the surface looks glassy, or the colour is unusual, and check the sides for the honeycomb pattern.
4. Look at the sides with a loupe
With a 10x loupe, look at the sides of the stone where the glass fibres end, at right angles to the eye. Fibre-optic glass shows a honeycomb or hexagonal (“chicken-wire”) pattern there.
