Hessonite commonly shows a swirly, slightly “oily” or heat-wave texture under a loupe. A perfectly clean orange stone with strong rainbow sparkle, or one with round bubbles, deserves a closer look and a lab report.

Look for bubbles, but let a lab decide. Perfectly round gas bubbles point to glass or another man-made material. Hessonite's own typical inclusions are small rounded crystals that can look bubble-like under a loupe, so if you see round inclusions, get a lab report rather than judging the stone yourself.
Be wary of strong fire in a flawless stone. Hessonite shows only moderate rainbow flashes. Very strong, bright rainbow flashes in a perfectly clean orange stone point to cubic zirconia or zircon, so ask for a lab report.
Weigh the price against the claim. A large, clean “Gomed” far below the going rate needs a lab report before you pay.
