Real vs Fake Emerald (Panna): How to Spot a Fake
Emerald (Panna) is one of the most faked gemstones in the market. Green glass, dyed stones, doublets and lab-grown crystals are all sold as natural emerald, often at natural prices. The good news is that a few simple checks, plus a proper certificate, will keep you safe. Here is how to tell a real Panna from a fake before you buy.
Want a Panna you can trust? Every emerald in the GemsMantra collection is natural, X-ray verified and comes with a lab certificate you can check.
The common fakes to watch for
| Type | What it is | Tell-tale sign |
|---|---|---|
| Green glass | Coloured glass cut as a gem | Round gas bubbles inside, very clean, warm to touch slowly |
| Doublet | A thin slice of emerald or glass on a base | A join line visible from the side |
| Dyed stone | Pale quartz or beryl dyed green | Colour pools in cracks, uneven under magnification |
| Lab-grown | Real chemistry, made in a lab | Very clean, cheap, certificate says synthetic or created |
| Heavily filled | Natural emerald with heavy resin filling | Flash of colour in the cracks under light |
Simple checks you can do
- Look for the garden. Real emeralds almost always have tiny natural inclusions, called “jardin” or garden. A flawless, glassy “emerald” at a low price is a warning sign.
- Check for bubbles. Round gas bubbles usually mean glass. Natural inclusions look like fine threads, crystals or feathers, not perfect spheres.
- Look from the side. A visible join line points to a doublet.
- Watch the colour. If green sits mainly in the cracks, the stone may be dyed.
- Mind the price. Natural emerald is not cheap. A large, clean, very inexpensive stone is rarely a genuine, untreated Panna.
The eye can be fooled, and a good fake looks convincing. The certificate is the one check that cannot be argued with.
The only sure test: a certificate
Home checks help you spot the obvious fakes, but they cannot confirm origin and treatment. For that you need a report from a recognised lab. A genuine certificate states that the stone is a natural emerald, notes any treatment such as oiling, and carries a report number you can verify. When you buy by certificate, you are not relying on a photo or a promise.
The GemsMantra standard
We come from a 53-year family lineage of Vedic practice, and we treat trust as the product. Every Panna is individually X-ray tested and ships with a government-recognised certificate that confirms a natural emerald, with a verifiable report number.
Common questions
How can I tell if an emerald is real?
Look for natural inclusions (the garden), avoid stones that are flawless and cheap, check for a join line or bubbles, and above all buy with a certificate from a recognised lab.
Do real emeralds have inclusions?
Yes. Almost all natural emeralds have tiny inclusions called jardin. A completely clean, inexpensive “emerald” is often glass or lab-grown.
Is a cheap emerald always fake?
Not always, but be careful. Natural emerald is valuable, so a large, clean stone at a very low price is usually glass, dyed or lab-grown.
Are oiled emeralds fake?
No. Light oiling is a common and accepted treatment for natural emeralds. Heavy resin filling is different, and a certificate should note the level of treatment.
Does a lab-grown emerald work for astrology?
In Vedic tradition, no. Only a natural emerald is worn as a Mercury (Budh) remedy. Lab-grown stones are treated as jewellery.
