A name that also means "green"
పచ్చ in Telugu and ಪಚ್ಚೆ in Kannada go back to a Proto-Dravidian root for green, the same root behind Tamil பச்சை and Malayalam പച്ച. In both languages the word names the colour and the gem. The Telugu Wiktionary gives "a kind of gem, marakatamu" among its meanings, and Kannada Wikipedia's article on emerald is titled ಪಚ್ಚೆ. Telugu Wikipedia's article on Budh gives పచ్చ as Mercury's ratna. "Pachu" is the spelling most people type when they search in English. The name is used across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka.
Make sure "pachu" means emerald
Because the same word means green, a listing called "pachu stone" should still say which gem it is. On this page every product is sold as emerald, a variety of the mineral beryl. Before you pay:
- Read Species and Variety on the report. They should name beryl and emerald, not a general green stone.
- Know the look-alikes. Green onyx, green glass and peridot are all green. Peridot is a genuine gem and the upratna most often named for Panna, but it is not emerald and costs less.
- Treatment. Most emeralds are oiled. In a 24-Sep-2026 sample of 20 Panna listings here, 18 stated "Untreated (Oiling Only)".
- Buying by carat. Many buyers search a size such as "2.5 carat". Listings show both carat and ratti; the carat to ratti converter helps you line them up.
- Verify the report. Enter the number on the Check Certificate page. The certification and guarantee page explains the refund if a qualifying lab proves a stone synthetic. GemsMantra works with leading labs including GIA, IGI, GRS and GJEPC's IIGJ. Each stone's listing names the lab that issued its report and the report number.
Natural, lab-grown and filled emerald
Emeralds can be grown in a laboratory by flux or hydrothermal methods, and those stones are real emerald in composition but not natural. GemsMantra sells natural stones only. Some natural emeralds are also filled with resin rather than oil to hide fissures, and a filled stone is priced well below an oiled one of the same look. Two report fields help here: Comments, where treatments and observations are noted, and Test Carried Out, which says how the stone was examined. If either is blank on the listing, ask before you commit to a Pachu.
Wearing customs, as traditionally stated
Pachu is traditionally set in gold (or panchdhatu) and worn on the little finger of the working hand, starting on a Wednesday morning. Many astrologers suggest about 3 ratti or more; this is general guidance. Because Mercury placements vary widely, tradition asks you to confirm the stone against your chart first, with the free Gemstone Calculator or an astrologer consultation (₹499, adjusted against a purchase).
