One Dravidian word for pearl
Tamil முத்து (Muthu), Malayalam മുത്ത് (Muthu), Kannada ಮುತ್ತು (Muttu) and Telugu ముత్యము / ముత్యం (Mutyam) are related words; dictionaries compare them with the Sanskrit muktā. Tamil also has older literary words for pearl, such as நித்திலம் (nittilam). You will hear Muthu in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala, and Mutyam in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Unlike the mineral gems, a pearl is organic. The Tamil and Telugu Wikipedia articles describe how it forms inside a mollusc such as a pearl oyster, layer on layer around an irritant.
How to judge a Muthu
- Natural or cultured. Check whether the report calls the pearl natural or cultured. Both are real pearls, but they are priced very differently.
- Lustre before size. A sharp, bright reflection on the surface matters more than size. Dull, chalky pearls are the weaker buy.
- Surface and shape. Small blemishes are normal. Round shapes cost more than off-round or button shapes.
- Daily care. Put your Muthu on after perfume and hair spray, never before, and wipe it with a soft cloth when you take it off. Acids and sweat slowly dull the surface.

Pearls in Tamil and Telugu history
Pearls have a long history in the regions where Muthu and Mutyam are spoken. The Gulf of Mannar, between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka, was one of the world's best-known sources of natural pearls for centuries, and Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) is still called the Pearl City. In Telangana, Hyderabad is known as the City of Pearls for its long pearl trade, where pearls are drilled, sorted and strung. Today most pearls sold anywhere are cultured, and the natural pearl fishery of the Gulf of Mannar has long since declined.
Wearing customs, as traditionally stated
The Moon's pearl is customarily set in silver for the little finger of the right hand, and Monday morning is the usual day to begin.
