The meaning of Mukta

Mukta is the Sanskrit muktā. It is traditionally derived from the root muc, "to loosen or set free", because the pearl is freed from its shell. Pearl texts also use muktāphala, "pearl-fruit". Bengali keeps the word as মুক্তা (Mukta), pronounced "mukto" in parts of West Bengal, with মোতি (Moti) as a synonym and মুকুতা in some regional speech. In Hindi usage the everyday word is Moti, while Mukta appears in older and more formal writing.

Classical Sanskrit literature describes pearls from many fanciful sources. The Sanskrit Wikipedia article lists elephants, serpents, conch, clouds, bamboo, whales and boars alongside the oyster. These are literary traditions; the pearls sold today come from molluscs such as pearl oysters.

What to check before buying a Mukta

• Which kind of pearl. A natural pearl formed without human help; a cultured pearl was seeded by a farmer. The report names which one you are buying, and natural pearls are rare and far dearer.
• Nacre thickness. A cultured pearl is a bead coated in nacre. Where the nacre is thin, it can wear through over years of daily wear; the edge of the drill hole is where a jeweller checks for it.

Freshwater, saltwater and imitation pearls

Cultured pearls come in two broad kinds. Freshwater pearls grow in mussels in lakes and rivers and are the most affordable. Saltwater pearls such as Akoya and South Sea pearls grow in oysters and usually cost more for the same size. Imitation pearls are glass or plastic beads with a pearly coating. A simple traditional check is to rub the pearl gently against the edge of a tooth: real pearls, natural or cultured, feel slightly gritty, while imitations feel smooth.
