Emerald Panna hero

Emerald Stone (Panna Stone)

Emerald Stone, known as Panna stone in Hindi, is a prized green gemstone admired for its lush colour and timeless elegance. In Vedic astrology, Emerald is the gemstone of Mercury (Budh), the planet of intelligence, communication, business, and learning.

Emerald (Panna) - The Gemstone of Mercury

Emerald Stone, also called Panna, is a green gemstone known for its rich colour and natural beauty. In Vedic astrology, Panna is traditionally associated with Mercury (Budh). People buy Emerald for jewellery as well as for traditional astrological purposes.

The colour of Emerald can range from light green to a deeper bluish-green. Its value depends on several factors, including colour, clarity, carat weight, cut, origin, natural status, and treatment. Natural Emeralds commonly have small inclusions inside the stone, so a few visible marks do not necessarily mean the gemstone is poor quality.

What Is Emerald Stone?

Emerald is a green variety of beryl. Its colour is mainly linked to trace amounts of elements such as chromium and vanadium. Emerald has a hardness of around 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, but it can have internal fractures, which means it should be handled with care.

One interesting feature of natural Emerald is its internal pattern of inclusions. Gem experts often call this pattern “jardin”, a French word meaning garden. These inclusions are common in natural Emeralds and can be part of the stone's identity.

Why Is Panna Used in Vedic Astrology?

In traditional Vedic astrology, Panna is linked with Mercury (Budh). Mercury is traditionally connected with communication, learning, reasoning, business, and analytical thinking.

Some people choose Emerald after checking their Kundali or birth chart. However, the suitability of a gemstone can differ from one person to another. If you are buying Panna for astrological use, it is sensible to check your birth details and seek guidance from a qualified astrologer.

These uses are based on traditional astrological beliefs and should not be understood as a guarantee of a specific result.

How to Choose a Good Emerald Stone?

Choosing Panna is not simply about finding the greenest or biggest stone. A few basic checks can make the buying process easier.

  • Natural status: Check whether the Emerald is natural or laboratory-grown.
  • Colour: Look for a pleasing green colour with good distribution.
  • Clarity: Natural Emeralds often contain inclusions. Look for major cracks or features that may affect durability.
  • Treatment: Ask whether the stone has received any clarity or colour treatment.
  • Weight and size: Check both carat weight and measurements instead of judging size alone.
  • Certificate: A laboratory report can provide useful information about the gemstone and any treatment detected.

For a higher-value Emerald, these details become even more important. The certificate should also match the gemstone being offered to you.

Natural Emerald vs Treated Emerald

Natural Emeralds can contain fractures and inclusions. Because of this, some Emeralds are treated to improve their apparent clarity. Treatments can include filling surface-reaching fractures with materials such as oil or resin.

Treatment by itself does not tell you everything about a gemstone's quality. What matters to a buyer is knowing whether treatment has been used and having that information clearly disclosed.

When buying a certified Emerald, check the laboratory report for details about its natural or laboratory-grown status and any treatment reported or detected by the laboratory.

Emerald Stone Price

There is no single fixed price for Emerald Stone. Two Panna gemstones with the same carat weight can have very different prices.

Colour, clarity, carat weight, cut, origin, treatment, natural status, and overall quality can all affect the price. In many cases, colour and quality are more useful for comparison than weight alone.

For expensive Emeralds, a laboratory report can give you additional information to consider before purchasing.

Emerald at GemsMantra

At GemsMantra, Emerald (Panna) gemstones are available in different sizes and quality options. Product information and available laboratory certification are provided so buyers can review important gemstone details before making a purchase.
For customers choosing Panna for traditional Vedic astrology, the gemstone can be selected after considering birth details and astrological guidance. Traditional Vedic energization options may also be available with the gemstone.

Benefits of Wearing Emerald Stone (Panna)

Emerald, or Panna, is traditionally linked with Mercury (Budh) in Vedic astrology. It is often chosen for its association with communication, learning, practical thinking, and expression. The gemstone is also popular for its fresh green colour and natural beauty.

The benefits discussed below come from traditional Vedic astrology. They are not proven medical or scientific effects, and Panna may not be suitable for everyone.

1. Traditionally Associated With Clear Communication

Mercury has a strong connection with speech and communication in Vedic astrology. For this reason, Panna is traditionally worn by people who want to focus on expressing their thoughts more clearly and confidently.

It is especially associated with activities that involve speaking, writing, discussion, and sharing ideas.

2. Linked With Learning and Knowledge

Mercury represents learning, understanding, and the ability to work with information. Panna is therefore traditionally considered by students and people who regularly deal with study, writing, numbers, or communication.

Its traditional association is more about supporting Mercury-related qualities than promising a particular academic result.

3. Traditionally Connected With Business and Trade

Panna has long been associated with Mercury-related areas such as business, trade, accounts, calculation, and communication.

Because of this, people involved in business, sales, trading, marketing, or other communication-based work may consider Emerald as part of their traditional astrological practice.

4. Associated With Practical and Analytical Thinking

Mercury is also linked with logic, observation, and analysis. In traditional astrology, Emerald is sometimes chosen when Mercury has an important role in a person's birth chart.

People who follow this practice may wear Panna with the intention of supporting qualities such as organised thinking, understanding details, and practical decision-making.

5. Traditionally Linked With Writing and Expression

Emerald is not only connected with business and logic. Mercury also represents writing, speaking, language, and expression.

This is why Panna is traditionally associated with writers, teachers, speakers, students, content creators, and others whose work depends on communication.

6. May Be Considered for Mercury-Related Kundali Placements

The main astrological reason for wearing Panna is its connection with Budh or Mercury. However, traditional Vedic astrology does not suggest that everyone should wear the same gemstone.

An astrologer may consider the person's Kundali, Mercury's placement, and other planetary factors before recommending Panna.

Who Should Wear Panna?

Panna should not be selected only because it is a popular green gemstone. If you are choosing it for astrological reasons, your birth details and Kundali should be considered first.

It is also worth checking the gemstone itself. Look at its natural status, treatment, colour, clarity, carat weight, measurements, and laboratory certificate before purchasing.

Emerald, known as Panna in Hindi, is the gemstone of Mercury (Budh) in Vedic astrology. It is traditionally worn for intelligence, communication skills, business acumen, and for strengthening Mercury in the birth chart.

In Vedic tradition, Emerald is believed to sharpen intelligence and communication skills, support business growth and financial decisions, improve relationships through better expression, and strengthen Mercury's positive influence.

These benefits are based on traditional Vedic beliefs. Individual experiences and results may vary.

A vivid green colour with good clarity commands the highest price. In our current listings, Colombian emeralds carry the highest prices per ratti, Zambian stones sit well below them and the few Brazilian stones are listed at lower prices.

See our Panna stone price guide for current pricing per carat and per ratti.

Certificates on Panna listings

GemsMantra works with leading labs including GIA, IGI, GRS and GJEPC's IIGJ. Each stone's listing names the lab that issued its report and the report number. Of the 181 active Panna listings, 91 name an IIGJ / IGI report, 64 list a GemsMantra report together with IIGJ (some also IGI), 9 name GemsMantra alone, 5 name Gemtrue and 12 do not list an issuer. Check the issuer and report number on the listing of the exact stone. You can check a GemsMantra report number here.

What Panna is

Panna is the Hindi name for emerald, the green variety of the mineral beryl. Emerald is 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, softer and more brittle than sapphire, so it needs a protective setting and gentle cleaning. Its refractive index is about 1.57 to 1.58. GemsMantra lists natural emeralds only; the certificate species line should read natural beryl, variety emerald.

What sets the price

Colour is the biggest driver: a clear, vivid green is valued above light, bluish or dark stones. Clarity comes next; almost every natural emerald has inclusions, so eye-clean stones are scarce and priced higher. Weight, cut, clarity enhancement and origin follow. In our current listings, Colombian emeralds carry the highest prices per ratti and Zambian stones sit well below them; the few Brazilian stones are listed at lower prices.

Same weight, very different price

Among our active Panna stones of about 5.4 to 6.6 ratti (35 stones), the price per ratti runs from ₹7,877 (a 6 ratti Zambian stone listed with an IIGJ / IGI / IGL report) through a median of ₹33,756 to ₹1,68,360 (a 6.2 ratti Zambian stone listed with an IIGJ / IGI / IGL report). The weight is almost the same; colour, clarity and certificate explain the gap. Compare like with like.

Clarity enhancement

Filling surface-reaching fissures with oil or resin is a long-standing, common practice for emerald. A good certificate states whether the stone is untreated or shows clarity enhancement, and to what degree. Read the exact treatment wording on the certificate of the stone you choose.

Ratti and carat

A carat is 200 mg. Our Panna listings convert at about 1.11 ratti per carat (1 ratti is about 0.9 carat), so a 4.5 carat stone is listed as about 5 ratti. Other sellers may use a different ratti, so compare quotes by carat weight. Our carat to ratti converter does the arithmetic.

Care

Choose a setting that protects the edges, take the ring off for heavy work, and clean it only with a soft cloth and lukewarm water. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, hot water and harsh chemicals, which can affect clarity-enhancing oil.

Questions to ask before you pay

  • Who issued the certificate, and what is its report number?
  • What does the treatment line say?
  • What is the weight in carats, not only in ratti?
  • Is the price for the loose stone, and what do the setting and energisation options add?
  • Can you see a daylight video of this exact stone?

A seller of natural stones should be able to answer all five in writing.

What the guarantee covers

Every stone ships with a GemsMantra authenticity report. If a Government-run gem laboratory, or one accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 for gemstone testing, proves a stone we supplied to be synthetic or the wrong stone, you get a full refund of the amount paid, a return or an exchange, with no time limit. Full terms are on our Certification and Guarantee page. Other returns apply to items that arrive damaged, defective or incorrect, reported within 7 days of delivery.
