Pukhraj (Yellow Sapphire) vs Yellow Topaz (Sunehla): Difference & Which to Wear
Pukhraj (Yellow Sapphire) and Yellow Topaz, called Sunehla in Hindi, are both a warm golden-yellow, so shoppers often confuse them or ask if one can replace the other. They are different stones. Pukhraj is a precious corundum sapphire and the classical gem of Jupiter (Guru) among the Navratna. Yellow Topaz is a separate, softer, cheaper mineral that is sometimes worn as a budget Jupiter substitute. Here is how they compare, and which one you should wear.

Pukhraj vs Yellow Topaz at a glance
| Property | Pukhraj (Yellow Sapphire) | Yellow Topaz (Sunehla) |
|---|---|---|
| Mineral | Corundum (sapphire family) | Topaz |
| Hardness (Mohs) | 9 (second only to diamond) | 8 |
| Category | Precious, one of the nine Navratna | Semi-precious |
| Ruling planet | Jupiter (Guru), the primary gem | Jupiter, budget substitute |
| Typical price / carat | ₹3,000 to ₹30,000+ | ₹500 to ₹3,000 |
| Astrological strength | Full Jupiter remedy | Milder, gentler |
Why they get confused
Both are yellow, and a bright topaz can pass for a light pukhraj at a glance. Yellow topaz is far cheaper, which is why it sometimes turns up where a yellow sapphire was expected, or is offered as “Sunehla” without the buyer realising it is a different stone. For colour that may be fine. For a Jupiter remedy, the two are not equal.
Yellow topaz is a genuine stone, but pukhraj is the classical Jupiter gem. For a Guru remedy, choose yellow sapphire.
Which should you wear?
For a Jupiter (Guru) remedy, worn for wisdom, prosperity, marriage and good fortune, choose a certified natural Pukhraj. It is the classical Navratna gem of Jupiter and one of the gentlest to wear. Yellow Topaz (Sunehla) is accepted in some traditions as a lighter, budget substitute for Jupiter when a yellow sapphire is out of reach. It is gentler and less potent. If you want the full effect, pukhraj is the stone. If budget is tight, sunehla is a fair start, but never pay pukhraj prices for it, and confirm with an astrologer either way.
How to tell Pukhraj from Yellow Topaz
- Read the certificate. A genuine report names the mineral, either "Natural Yellow Sapphire (Corundum)" or "Topaz". That one line settles it.
- Mind the price. Corundum is far rarer than topaz, so a very cheap "pukhraj" is worth a second look.
- Hardness. Sapphire is 9 and topaz is 8, close but measurable in a lab.
- Prefer X-ray or lab verification over a seller's word.
The GemsMantra standard

Common questions
Is yellow topaz the same as pukhraj?
No. Yellow Topaz (Sunehla) is a topaz, while Pukhraj is a corundum sapphire. They share a yellow colour, but their mineral, hardness, price and astrological strength are all different.
Can I wear yellow topaz instead of pukhraj?
Yellow topaz is accepted in some traditions as a lighter, budget substitute for Jupiter, but it is gentler and less potent than a yellow sapphire. For the full remedy, pukhraj is preferred. Confirm with an astrologer.
What is Sunehla?
Sunehla is the common Hindi name for yellow topaz, a Jupiter substitute stone. It should not be confused with genuine Pukhraj (yellow sapphire).
Why is yellow topaz cheaper than pukhraj?
Topaz is more common than gem-quality corundum, which is why pukhraj costs many times more per carat.
Which is better for astrology?
Pukhraj, for a Jupiter (Guru) remedy. Yellow topaz is best seen as a budget substitute.
